Included: 10 mixed size Porcellio laevis, our composting isopod, and full instructions. You'll recieve a mix of juvenile and adult; this is our smaller kit size.

The isopods come housed in a shipping container and will need to be rehoused in 1-2 weeks. Additional substrate and housing not included.

Our P. laevis are what is called "wild-type," and get comparatively large (almost 1 inch in length). They are an excellent composting resource: we call them our charismatic composters. They are easy to feed and care for, consuming a large amount of exotic human vegetable and fruit scraps, vividly interesting, and do not bite, smell, fly or jump.  They can be housed in everything from a recycled deli container to an aquarium.  The cohabitate wonderfully into a red wiggler container composter, and when combined this way prove to be approximately 3 times as efficient as worms on their own. They do not climb smooth surfaces such as plastic or glass.

Isopods are a fantastic and easy colony organism in the classroom - not insects, but tiny land crustaeans which breathe through gills - with many uses. As an in-home or in-classroom composter, they eat common household veggies and fruits like apple cores, cucumber, carrot, squash, and lettuce. They are relatively tolerant of disturbance and prefer soil and soil-like material for bedding (coconut coir, peat, black earth, decaying wood chips). Isopods are also a great beneficial member of your reptile or amphibian vivarium, as they will clean up waste products produced by your other pets. These are a must-have addition to a Waste in Our World unit, because unlike worms, kids can handle isopods.

Please do not release your isopods outdoors.

Isopods can be ordered year-round.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Sorry, no refunds. Remember: you are dealing with living animals. Nature is not perfect; in the wild, survival rates would naturally be very low, with only around 5% of butterflies surviving to adulthood. In captivity, you should expect a much higher rate of 70%-90% survival. Please incorporate these statistics into your lesson plan, and never assign a single isopod to a single participant, as some of them will not make it. It is always ideal to observe invertebrates as a population.

SHIPPING: Please review your invoice carefully to ensure there are no mistakes in the information we have been given for you. Ensure your order has been translated correctly. Butterfly Wings N' Wishes is not responsible for shipment delay or failure due to incorrect information on the invoice. OTHER LIVING SCIENCE KITS: Bees, fruit flies, isopods, worms, and other living science kits are a one-time purchase and are not typically guaranteed. Once the kits are delivered they are the responsibility of the client for their husbandry, feeding and care, although if you do experience a loss you cannot explain, be sure to contact us to explore some solutions. We want the best for our animals and are anxious to do all we can to help them thrive. In the event that you are no longer happy with your animals, please contact us to return them to where they are safe. Under no conditions should any of these animals be released in the event that you no longer want them.
